Grecia’s markets...outdoor, indoor, small, medium, large and TINY.



Saturday’s market in Grecia is a delight. Well over 100 stalls sell fresh fruits and vegetables from all over the country ( and a smattering of flowers, plants and miscellaneous odds and ends ). Beginning at 6 in the morning locals stream in.
The variety is astounding...from starfruit to cashew ( the fruit, replete with the nut ), to squash, lettuce and , of course, beans....there must be at least a hundred different varieties of fruits, vegetables, and ( don’t forget ) coffee.

Prices? ...try 3 pineapples for a dollar in season OR 3 mangos for the same...and of course , oranges, bananas, and avocados are almost given away. A typical expenditure for us for a week is under $10...and we usually buy too much!

The sellers and growers come from as far away as Orotina, Zarcero, and San Carlos. These outdoor markets are the farmers’ largest souce of revenue in many cases.

And if one cannot make Saturday’s market, Grecia has an indoor, “fresh everyday” market as well...fruits, vegetables and meats of all kinds.

And for those who want a little more variety, there is a supermarket in Grecia ( Perimercado) which rivals most in the States or Canada. For more convenience almost every neighborhood has a “mini mercado” which is similar to a Tom Thumb or 7-11 or superette in the States. And finally...the pulperia...which will allow you to buy the smallest quantity of a very limited selection...one bandaid, one cigarette, one stick of gum or one handful of rice. These tiny stores are everywhere and serve those who live in the immediate area and who may not have bus fare or the funds available for purchases of larger quantities. The pulperia and mini mercado are great source of news and gossip for the immediate area.

1. Santa Rosa de Poas...about fifteen minutes from Grecia and ten from San Pedro de Poas. About 250 meters off of a public road . Planted in coffee with many orange, lemon and mango trees. Gorgeous valley and mountain view and overshadowed ( 15 miles away) by the Poas Volcano. Gently sloping to a river. This property is private , yet centrally located. The owner needs to sell and its price reflects it... one hectare for only $24,000...and one additional available. Call quickly.

2. Grecia...ten minutes from the center of town. Gorgeous view of the entire central Valley. Planted in coffee. Good access , about 400 meters from a public road on a good , level gravel road. Utilities next to property. Great building location. Other properties similar to this have sold for twice this much. Private and panoramic. Birds galore. One manzana, almost two acres.... $30,000.

3. 2000 sq. meters, in Bajamar. 125 meters from the ocean. Titled, no view...but a one minute walk...and hear the waves! Nice yard, fruit trees, very private. House needs work but very decent for the price. Less than $30,000.

4. New area in the Nicoya Penninsula...only 1 ½ hour drive from San Jose to Puntarenas, a one hour ferry ride to Pacquera...and you are almost there. These properties are just a few miles away from Montezuema, Tambor and Malpais where beach properties of only 5000 sq. meters sell for well over $1,000,000! These properties are ALL within a very very short walk or ride from several white sand beaches which are rarely used by ANYONE. The views and beaches of this area rival any others , and that includes the overpriced areas of Dominical, Uvita, Tamarindo, and Playa Flamingo or Papagayo. In our opinion, they are far better because they are undiscovered. But not for long.

     

We anticipate that prices will begin to rise very very soon. We don’t know how long this window of opportunity will be open but please, if this area has appeal to you... please let us know. The bay of Nicoya is well known to natives for its scuba diving, numerous islands for exploring, fishing , boating and generally just enjoying the flora and fauna that is Costa Rica.
