It goes without saying that our country has problems.

Big problems.

And many believe that they cannot be reversed.

But… whether they can or cannot… the bottom line is that many of us need to make choices about how to react to these problems.

Unless you are in a coma or simply prefer sticking your “head in the sand”… you pretty much know that our country is in trouble.

No, I am not talking about “financial Armageddon” the fiscal cliff and all of that stuff… although that is a serious problem to that we have to address pretty quickly.

I am talking about even more serious stuff.

Issues like half of the voters in this country do not even pay taxes…

…and the things that we thought we could take for granted slowly being taken away from us… and worse yet, no one is saying anything or even writing about it… things that are written in our Constitution that make our country the way it has always been. Or at least up until now.

Privacy… invaded without a whimper.

You know that you can be arrested now and held without a charge… indefinitely… and our government can now legally do that.

We are fighting wars that 95% of the public disagrees with.

We are spending money on things that 99% of the public disagrees with.

And it continues to happen… over and over.

People are scared.

But they don’t know what to do.

“Buy stocks and protect yourselves”, some say.
“buy gold”
“go off the grid”
“get a hideaway so that when society collapses you’ll have a place to go”

You’ve all read advice like this.

And you ignore it because it is easier just to sit back… whine, and say “there’s nothing I can do.”

I’m going to show you an alternative that you have never considered… and frankly, I think it will knock your socks off.

And face it… will you really care if you have a shelter somewhere with gold and stocks if the country does really go to hell in a hand basket?

I wouldn’t… I’d rather be somewhere where I can still enjoy life… and still have the things that are important to me.

My wife and I live in Costa Rica. We moved here, ostensibly to retire… shortly after 9-11.

We moved here mainly because it was cheaper to live here and we wanted more than just cruising the aisles in Walmart or becoming depressed watching the news every night. ( or freezing our butts off in Minnesota either! )

But we found a lot more… and if we had to make a movie about our lives… Hollywood could not have scripted it better.

Everyone knows that Costa Rica is a great place to vacation. But very few people know that more people return to Costa Rica a second, a third and more, times than any other desination on earth.

And Costa Rica… for its small size… is one of the “greenest” places on the earth… and contains one of the world’s few “blue zones” where people routinely live over 100 years of age.

And there is no oil drilling, no strip mining, no nuclear power… nearly all of the energy here is hydroelectric… and Costa Rica is the only country in the world that has committed to being carbon neutral in the next decade.

People nearly always comment that a visit here is like stepping back in time half a century. And people that stay here a little longer … find that the values which were so important and common place decades ago, are still alive and well in Costa Rica… kind of like a “Spanish Leave it to Beaver” show. And family is still the foundation of everything and things like honor, trust and core values are still found everywhere in Costa Rica.

When people say that you can’t “go back” and they talk about the “good old days”… they haven’t been to Costa Rica.

But even better yet… freedom is still alive and well in Costa Rica. And the opportunities are like they were “back in the old days” too. The country has a laissez faire attitude of government, and while it is a democracy ( the longest running in Latin America ) the people have freedom that they no longer have in many other so called modern countries. And it is a good feeling and one that many of us desperately miss.

My wife and I came here to retire. But we couldn’t do it. And we have found huge opportunities here that barely exist at all “back home. And these opportunities are everywhere in Costa Rica.
