Last week a friend of mine in Turrialba sent me a note telling me about his project and also telling me that a realtor he had met told him ( in a conversation about other realtors ) that I was easily the “worst realtor in Costa Rica?”
“why?”, my friend asked. And when pushed a little further, the realtor admitted that she didn’t know me, but had “heard things about him that weren’t good!”
Costa Rica is a pond of sharks when it comes to real estate! It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world…and certainly much more affordable than many other places in the world, especially when it comes to real estate.
But those same features have attracted literally thousands of real estate agents, developers and promoters that see Costa Rica as a prime opportunity to “fleece” ( yes, fleece ) the unsuspecting that are awed by the beauty the country contains.
Because there are no laws and no rules and regulations, Costa Rica has become a Mecca for telephone solicitors touting land that is “just like Florida was before the boom!” And developers are snapping up large tracts of land , paying literally pennies, and turning around and selling for dollars.
Think this isn’t true? How many places do you now see Costa Rican real estate being sold and advertised? …on television, in local expositions ( lawn and garden shows for example ) , mass emails are in your mailboxes almost daily…advertisements are everywhere and , if you indicate an interest, you are bombarded with phone calls from pushy sales people. Do you really think that this would be taking place if it weren’t for the massive profits which exist in Costa Rican real estate?
Gee, could it be that the above statements have something to do with some developers and realtors saying that I and CR Home Realty are “the worst ever”, without even knowing me.

This ad is meant to make you think …to think that “maybe I should do a little due diligence. And just maybe, the prices that I think are so good…really aren’t so good.”
There ARE good and honest real estate people here in Costa Rica and there are honest developers that have superb products. BUT you have to look for them …and you really have to know what you are looking for. Do you really know what construction costs are in Guanacaste or along the Central Pacific coast?….and do you know what comparable pieces of land are selling for?…and do you know what your risks are if you use the “wrong” title company or the “wrong” attorney?
